We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller, Finance & Administration professional to take ownership of the company's finance and administrative operations.

This is a highly operational Controller role for someone who enjoys being close to the business. The successful candidate will oversee accounting, financial operations, payroll, benefits, vendor management, and various administrative functions while helping the organization build efficient, scalable processes.

Our client is looking for a practical, dependable finance leader who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves, taking ownership, and balancing strategic judgment with hands-on execution.

  • Oversee the company's accounting function, including bookkeeping and maintenance of accounting records
  • Ensure general ledger accuracy, including accruals, amortization schedules, and month-end adjustments
  • Review financial statements and investigate significant or unusual variances
  • Coordinate annual tax preparation and serve as the primary liaison with external accounting partners
  • Prepare and review state revenue reports, tax registrations, and annual filings
  • Manage year-end reporting requirements, including W-2s and 1099s
Payroll & Benefits
  • Review and approve payroll processing through ADP
  • Oversee PTO tracking and payroll reconciliation
  • Administer the company's 401(k) program, including annual testing and periodic reviews
  • Coordinate employee benefits administration and related vendor relationships
Accounts Payable, Receivables & Banking
  • Oversee customer invoicing and maintain accurate billing processes
  • Schedule and authorize vendor payments
  • Review corporate credit card transactions for accuracy, appropriate expense classification, and policy compliance
  • Review contractor time records and payment approvals
  • Monitor and manage company cash balances across banking and investment accounts
Finance & Administrative Operations
  • Oversee day-to-day financial and administrative operations
  • Manage key vendor relationships, subscriptions, and recurring business services
  • Coordinate insurance renewals and other corporate administrative requirements
  • Support employee onboarding and offboarding from an administrative perspective
  • Maintain and improve financial and administrative procedures and documentation
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, automate, and improve routine business processes
  • Help establish efficient processes and controls to support continued growth
Leadership & Business Partnership
  • Provide direction and oversight for bookkeeping activities performed internally or through external providers
  • Serve as the primary owner of the company's Finance & Administration function
  • Partner closely with the COO and senior leadership team to provide accurate financial information and sound operational guidance
  • Help leadership understand financial performance, trends, and areas requiring attention
  • Support acquisition readiness, financial due diligence, and other strategic business initiatives as needed
Qualifications
  • 8–15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
  • Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader
  • Experience working within a small to mid-sized organization, ideally with approximately $2M–$25M in annual revenue
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and accrual accounting
  • Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online or a comparable accounting platform
  • Experience overseeing payroll, benefits administration, and external accounting providers
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage accounting and finance operations
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent judgment, problem-solving ability, and follow-through
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
Ideal Candidate
Our client is looking for someone who enjoys building a well-run organization without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.

You are equally comfortable reviewing a journal entry, approving payroll, working with outside accountants, improving an invoicing process, or stepping in to solve an operational challenge.

The ideal candidate is:
  • Hands-on – willing to do the work, not simply delegate it
  • Practical – focused on solutions rather than unnecessary complexity
  • Organized – able to manage multiple financial and administrative responsibilities with precision
  • Dependable – takes ownership and follows through
  • Business-minded – understands how financial decisions impact the broader organization
  • Process-oriented – naturally identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and scalability
  • Independent – comfortable operating with significant ownership and minimal supervision
