Overview
The Design Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end development of mechanical products, leading designs from initial concept through production release. This role operates in a fast-paced environment with accelerated product development cycles and requires strong technical execution, organization, and time management.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop new products from concept through prototyping and production release
Create and maintain 3D models, assemblies, and detailed drawings using CAD software
Generate and manage all required technical documentation, including:
Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Assembly and weldment drawings
Installation instructions
Manufacturing support documentation (e.g., fixtures)
Collaborate closely with project and manufacturing engineers to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability
Support prototype builds, testing, and iterative design improvements
Ensure accuracy, organization, and version control of engineering documentation within PDM systems
Balance multiple concurrent projects in a deadline-driven environment (typical cycles ≤ 6 months)
Product & Technical Scope
Mechanical systems and structures for equipment and vehicle accessories
Designs involving materials such as:
Sheet metal
Formed tubing
Glass
Thermoformed plastics
Strong emphasis on design for manufacturability (DFM), especially with sheet metal components
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required
Experience
5+ years of experience using SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed drawings
Experience with PDM systems (SolidWorks PDM Professional preferred)
Hands-on experience designing with sheet metal and tubular structures preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong proficiency in CAD design and product documentation
Experience with surface modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) preferred
High attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet aggressive timelines
Strong collaboration skills across engineering and manufacturing teams
Self-driven with the ability to work effectively under pressure
