Senior Web Traffic Management Engineer  (Hybrid) 
A leading global retailer is seeking a highly experienced Senior Web Traffic Management Engineer for a contract role focused on owning the operational excellence of a modern web delivery infrastructure. The selected candidate will serve as a subject matter expert in web traffic management technologies, with a strong emphasis on NGINX Plus, CDN optimization, and bot protection integration. This position requires deep hands-on experience in managing and optimizing high-traffic web environments hosted in Microsoft Azure.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operations, optimization, and advanced configuration of NGINX Plus to ensure high performance and availability of web traffic services.

  • Manage and fine-tune Fastly CDN configurations, including custom VCL, edge logic, and caching policies to deliver fast, reliable user experiences.

  • Collaborate with security teams to manage and optimize a bot protection platform, ensuring smooth integration with traffic management layers.

  • Design and implement scalable traffic routing solutions across cloud environments and edge delivery networks.

  • Automate deployment and configuration processes using tools like Ansible, Python, and Jenkins within a CI/CD ecosystem.

  • Oversee platform security management, including SSL/TLS certificate configuration and Web Application Firewall (WAF) policy tuning.

  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation and provide mentorship to engineering teams on NGINX and CDN best practices.

  • Act as the primary technical lead during major traffic-related incidents, managing cross-functional troubleshooting, coordinating resolution, and driving clear communication throughout.

  • Lead post-incident RCA investigations, produce blameless post-mortem reports, and present findings to improve system reliability and operational procedures.

  • Ensure platform documentation is continuously updated and accessible to internal teams and external vendors when needed.

  • Remain responsive and available during incident response via business phone for real-time updates and coordination.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field.

  • 8+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure, network engineering, DevOps, or systems engineering focused on web traffic management.

  • Expert-level proficiency with NGINX/NGINX Plus, including production operations, tuning for high performance, and complex configuration management.

  • Extensive hands-on experience configuring and managing Fastly CDN, including writing and deploying VCL, setting up caching strategies, and edge compute optimizations.

  • Experience integrating with bot mitigation platforms (experience with tools like Kasada is a plus).

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Azure, including services like Application Gateways, Load Balancers, and Autoscaling.

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python and Ansible.

  • Experience embedding traffic management tools into CI/CD pipelines for streamlined deployment and updates.
